1.5 hours from Hobart and
20 minutes from Dover, just off the A6 is the historic and
attractive little coastal settlement of Southport. Home to one of
Australia's Abolone and Crayfish industry. Southport
Tasmania remains
untouched by the commercial world and is an ideal place to relax
in one of the worlds most beautiful wilderness areas.
A short drive from Roaring Beach and Lady Bay, with
stunning white beaches and bull kelp coastline. The beautiful
Southport Lagoon Conservation Area is popular with locals and can
be accessed with a boat via Ida Bay Railway or walking tracks.
Or visit nearby
Hastings Caves and the
Thermal Pool, Lune River where the historic
Ida
Bay Railway runs daily excursions to Deep Hole or one of
two public gemstone/fossil fossicking areas. We are just
a
short drive
from Recherche Bay and Cockle Creek
which is Australia's most southern point accessible by Car. From
Cockle Creek you can embark on the spectacular
South Cape
Bay Walk which is
just one of the spectacular bush walks Tasmania has to offer in
"Tasmania's Far South".
Recreational or Game Fishing is a must do!!
The Southport Bay is only 700 meters from Southport Settlement
Caravan Park and there is a well constructed and safe boat ramp
within 1km. It is sheltered within in the Southport Bay and leads
into Hastings Bay which carries onto the Lune
River. Experienced fishermen who launch larger boats take off to
Pedra Blanca, (large rocky pinnacles reaching out of the sea) it
is certainly a spectacular sight. Bruny Island is also accessible
by boat from Southport Bay boat ramp. In fact, there are untold
boating adventures to be taken from Southport.
Fishing from our beaches, rocks or jetty is also
worthwhile. Pack a picnic, toss in a line. Just sit back and enjoy
the magnificent views while you are waiting for the "big one".
For the keen fisherman/woman there is certainly good fun to be
had, catching large tuna, cocky salmon, squid, flathead, flounder
and stripies, just to mention a few. You have every chance of
seeing whales as sightings are common.
Southport Tourist Haven offers you nights under millions of stars,
along with sounds of waves crashing on Roaring Beach.
We are within a half hour or less to
the local attractions mentioned.
We are situated on 12 acres of native bush land. At night the
native animals will forage around your camp sites and if you are
really fortunate you will see the Southern Lights
as they light up our night skies. Autumn is the best time to see
them.
